I Have a Sump Pump—Do I Need a Sewage Pump?

birds eye view of a sump pump pitThe short answer to this is, “yes, most likely.” Both of these pumps are similar in that they are comprised of a holding tank or large canisters and pumps. They are also both used as indoor septic systems—but there are different purposes for each.

Keep reading to learn more about both of these systems, their importance, and how to know when you need professional Glenview, IL sewage pump services.

What a Sump Pump Is

This is a system designed to rid your basement of water from flooding or any other form of excess water. These pumps are vital to many homes or buildings throughout the Glenview area, and with August being our rainiest month, it’s important that you have one in place if you have a basement, or if your home sits low. Any flooding or stagnant water can easily cause damage to your property, materials, and your home’s plumbing system.

Sump pumps are typically powered by electricity, and in the case of a power outage they can be powered by a backup battery. There are two main classifications for a sump pump—pedestal or submersible. Each of these has their pros and cons, which we will be happy to discuss with you!

What Is A Sewage Pump?

In contrast to a sump pump, sewage pumps—also often referred to as sewage ejector pumps or sewage grinder pumps—are designed to remove not just water but also waste and other small materials to your home’s septic tank or sewage system. Given that sewage pumps are almost always necessary in any building that has a bathroom, you’d do well to consider a sewage pump installation if you don’t already have one.

When professionally installed and serviced, sewage pumps effectively deal with solid and liquid waste, solid objects, and heavy liquids that are flushed down from your household appliances. A sewage pump uses gravity to force down the materials into the plumbing system—and rarely needs any type of maintenance. On occasion, however, large solid objects can block the machine from channeling, and therefore will need professional services.

So, Do I Need a Sewage Pump?

If you’ve recently finished your basement or are considering finishing it—and adding a bathroom, bar or laundry room, then yes. Although, if your main sewage line exits down through the concrete floor, then you very likely do not need a sewage pump. If, however, it exits through an exterior wall above the concrete floor, this is a necessary installation—and one we are ready to handle!
