Is It Time for a New Bathtub?

large-bathtub-with-decorative-tile-surround

Your bathtub should be a sanctuary, a place where you can fully relax and get away from the stresses of everyday life. It shouldn’t be the cause of any of your stress! But if you’re worrying about tub troubles, you won’t be able to enjoy your soak. Is it time for a new bathtub? Let’s consider.

Cracks

Any cracking of the tub itself or the surrounding tub deck or tile is a sign that serious problems are likely to occur just out of sight. Cracks can allow water to seep down behind and below the tub, where it can do huge amounts of damage and cause unsanitary mold growth. Cracking is a sure sign that it’s time for bathtub replacement.

Chips

A chip is not as bad as a crack, right? But it can certainly interfere with your ability to enjoy your tub if it feels sharp against you or makes you worry that your children will get scratched. A chip can also continue to deteriorate and lead to cracks, so it might be time for a new tub.

Difficulty Cleaning

There are two reasons why a tub might pose some challenges during the cleaning process. One is simply if the design of the tub has nooks and crannies that are difficult to scrub. The other has to do with age. Over time, after many baths, showers, and scrubbings, the surface of the tub will become more porous. This makes it susceptible to staining, which you will then scrub and scrub but be unable to remove.

Leaks

Are you worried about a dripping tub faucet, or worse, about water seeping in around the edges of faucet fixtures or the edges of the tub itself? Again, anything that means water might be soaking into your subfloor is a very serious concern, so don’t delay in getting the help you need. It’s better to replace a tub than to have to tear out the whole bathroom floor!

Accessibility

As you or your family members have changing needs due to age or disability, your bathtub may no longer meet those needs. Replacing it with something designed for accessibility is an excellent choice.

Selling Your Home

An outdated, unattractive, or less-than-ideal bathtub might be tolerable to live with. But a new, gleaming, gorgeous bathtub can be a real selling point if you’re hoping to motivate homebuyers. A facelift for your bathroom is a way to really increase the perceived value of your home.
