Common Plumbing Problems to Watch for the Winter

Fall has arrived in Glenview, IL, and winter won’t be too far behind. That poses a number of unique issues for your plumbing system, which can turn into big trouble if you’re not careful. Plumbing companies usually stay very busy in the winter addressing common plumbing problems. The sooner you’re aware of these problems and the more you know what to look out for, the fast you can respond. That can make a huge difference to your plumbing and your wallet.

Grease in Your Pipes

Thanksgiving, Christmas and other holidays often mean elaborate meals as friends and family come over to eat. In the course of making preparations, make sure you don’t get anything down the drain that may clog or block it. Hot grease and fats in particular, should never be poured down your drain. They will quickly solidify in the cool of your pipes and can make for ugly blockages if you let them. Try to avoid pouring any hot fats, oils or grease down your drain during holiday cooking, and if you spot signs of a clog, call in a plumber immediately.

Frozen Pipes

Froze pipes are a huge problem in Chicago in the winter. Water expands when it freezes and when it freezes in your pipes, it puts tremendous pressure on them. If the pipes burst, you could have a real problem on your hands. You can prevent frozen pipes by running your faucets and outlets just a trickle when you turn them off and by keeping the heat turned on at night or when you go out. If you’re worried about pipes near an outside wall or similar trouble spots, consider having a plumber insulate the pipes to keep the water inside from freezing.
